Vegetarian Festival is one of the popular festivals in Thailand that being celebrate annually. It started about 150 years ago in Khatu District where the majority of the Chinese tin mine workers settled in Phuket. They all gather in China Town to celebrates the festive season, they hire entertainers and they also sell a variety of dishes from noodle soup, dumplings, and sweets.
The Vegetarian Festival is also known as The Nine Emperor Gods Festival. It is a nine-day Taoist celebration begins on the eve of the 9th Lunar month of the Chinese Calendar, which observed primarily in South –East Asian countries like Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, Southern Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. During this period the Chinese followed the tradition of refraining from eating meat, drinking alcohol, engaging to sexual activities or crimes. It’s a week of purification, diet and healthy eating.
This festival attracts a lot of tourists to experience a variety of street food, night market and ceremonies such us performers piercing their tounges, cheeks and another part of the body using sharp equipment. Having no injuries or signs of pain amazes the tourist.
This year the Vegetarian Festival will run from 29 September till 7 of October 2019.
